The sparks were lit recently on LCCMEDIA when three of the most influential hijabis spent time discussing life as hijabis with Tee on her signature show, LadiesCorner with Tee.

The conversation focussed on the importance of wearing the hijab. The hijab is a scarf that Muslim women wear as a sign of their identity and in the practice of their religion.

Denmark, France, Belgium, Germany and Austria have banned veils in public spaces. In June 2019, Bill 21 was enacted in Quebec to criminalise the use of religious symbols in public spaces. As part of our series on Islam in 2020, three hijabis: Asma Ali, Mona Ishmael and Sogand Zakerhaghigi.

Asma Ali created a portrait series in 2019 t0 change the narrative after experiencing Islamophobic abuse online. She is a final year nursing student at the University of Alberta. Sogandz is a fashion blogger, coach and mental health advocate. With 130 thousand followers on Instagram, she faces every day a deluge of abuse on social media for promoting mental health and spreading peace online. Mona Ishmael is a blogger and writer at Mymodernhijab.com. She is originally from Egypt, but her family has lived in Jasper, Alberta for decades. These women are overachievers and leaders in their spheres of influence. In this conversation, they discuss their aspirations and the discrimination they face as hijabis.

LCC Media is grateful to Trent Daley from Muslims of Alberta (AMPAC) for his support in setting up this conversation.
