Mayor Sohi Gets to Work
Last night was phenomenal in Edmonton politics.
We elected our 1st Mayor of South Asian heritage and for the first time there are more female Edmonton city councillors than male ones.
It was a night on edge.
Edmonton Elections estimated that in Edmonton alone, there were 629, 006 eligible voters and 236,488 or 37.6% actually voted. This is the highest voter turnout since 2004.
The Breakdown

Tuesday afternoon, after picking up his Mayor -Elect portfolio, Mr Sohi tweeted:
My friends, I am honoured and humbled that you have chosen me to serve as Edmonton’s first South Asian mayor. I would like to take a moment to thank those who made this historic win possible. I promise to maintain that same commitment as we address the challenges that our city is currently facing. Together, we will create a thriving city for families, communities and businesses. That is the Edmonton I am passionate to lead.
I will lead the best way I know how—by example. We will make our city even stronger than it was before. We will dream big. We will build an Edmonton for all. Thank you everyone for all you have done to get us here.
Now, let’s get to work.
Who is Amarjeet Sohi?
Mr Sohi needs no introduction to Edmonton.
He was sponsored by his late older brother in 1982 when he was 18 years old to come to Canada. He served as Edmonton City Councillor in southeast Ward from 2007 to 2015 winning three re-lections before resigning from his seat being elected federally as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods. He served in that position till he was defeated in the 2019 elections.
Mr. Sohi is very respectful and kind. Each time we have asked for him at our programs, he distinguishes us with his attention. It seems obvious that the task ahead of Mr Sohi is huge, he takes over a city that is in need of economic recovery from the pandemic, a city with crumbling infrastructure, a city with a stubborn problem of homelessness and the opioids crises. A city in which black and indigenous people are routinely targeted by the Police. We are confident Mr. Sohi who appeals to the best in us, is the right man for the job.
The Analysis
LCCMedia held a panel to analyse the results last night. Many of the panelists thought Mr. Sohi won for so many reasons. He works to get a consensus, he has a policy on most of the teething problems faced by Edmontonians: inclusion, diversity, arts and culture, islamophobia and so on. Some of our panelists thought Mr Nickel’s campaign bothered on fear and some people were reminded some of America’s Donald Trump!
