“Feb. 1-7 is Eating Disorders Awareness Week. More than 55,000 Albertans are affected by eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating.

“Eating disorders can be a serious mental and physical health condition. Left unrecognized, undiagnosed and untreated, eating disorders can cause serious mental and physical harm. For many, particularly youth, the isolation and anxiety caused by the pandemic and related restrictions has only added to the challenges and emotional struggles felt by those living with eating disorders.

“The theme of this year’s Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Everyone has a role to play. Please connect with those you think are at risk of an eating disorder, especially young people. As only a small percentage of those who suffer seek medical attention, your awareness, understanding and support may save a life. With an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, a full recovery is possible.

“There are thousands of women and men in Alberta who have recovered from eating disorders and they provide a shining example that recovery is possible for everyone. As with any mental health challenge, while pursuing recovery may not always be easy, it is always worth it.

“The Eating Disorder Support Network of Alberta offers support groups in Edmonton, Calgary and online. Another great resource is the Silver Linings Foundation. They offer additional eating disorder support groups online. If you or someone you know is in distress, please call 211 Alberta and they will help you access eating disorder recovery supports.”
