Osborne is a self-taught Hong Kong-Canadian visual artist. A painter for more than 10 years, her travels and living in different countries inspire her creativity. She was the artist in residence in McLuhan House run by Art Habitat Edmonton from Oct. 1, 2020, to Sept. 30, 2021, and her first solo exhibition was ‘YEG Old Houses – Discover 11 Edmonton Home Architectural Styles’. She has also won the Allied Art Council Spruce Grove Open Art Competition twice.

Through her residency, Osborne will create 10 bold impressionist paintings of historical buildings from cities and villages selected to represent Alberta’s local history and display different architectural styles.

Osborne’s term as an arts ambassador begins immediately and will end on Sept. 30, the last day of the annual Month of the Artist in Alberta. She has one year to complete her residency project.

Host the Artist in Residence

Communities can invite the Artist in Residence to talk about the arts in Alberta at local events and meetings. An online application is available at the Artist in Residence web page on alberta.ca. All hosts must adhere to current public health protocols in their event plans.

Quick facts

  • The maximum eligible grant amount for the Artist in Residence program is $50,000, one of the richest individual artist grants in Alberta.
  • In 2019, the visual and applied arts and live performance industries contributed about $1.3 billion in GDP and 20,000 jobs in Alberta.
  • Bill 75: Arts Professions Recognition Act, which came into effect on Dec. 2, 2021, promotes greater economic security, freedom of expression and professional recognition for Alberta’s artists.

Art enriches the lives of Albertans, promotes creativity and innovation, and contributes to a more diversified economy. This program seeks to inspire innovation in the arts and to promote a wider understanding and appreciation of the arts and artists in Alberta.

Through this program, an Albertan artist receives a grant to serve a one-year term as Alberta’s Artist in Residence and Arts Ambassador, and they will create an art project that promotes the value of the arts in Alberta. During the term, the artist will engage with different communities, share their perspectives and an ‘inside look’ of their artistic process, and attend important cultural events as Alberta’s arts ambassador.

During their term as Alberta’s arts ambassador, the artist will:

  • engage with different communities
  • share their perspectives
  • offer an ‘inside look’ at their artistic process
  • attend important cultural events
