An Afternoon with Edmonton Councillor Ashley Salvador

Spread the love

The night Ashley won the election was a life-changing evening.  She finds her role as councillor a rewarding position that enables her to speak with community residents of Edmonton and deal with daily issues and concerns that constituents bring forward. Door knocking gives Ashley hope because she connects with Edmontonians.  Being involved with Council for only a few months, she noticed action was taken regarding Anti-Racism and a balanced budget delivered.

Concerned about the community safety ecosystem, Ashley believes that proactive and preventative measures, greater transparency and accountability and addressing police detasking and funding are needed.  Regarding the Trucker’s Convoy, Ashley heard various concerns from citizens regarding the enforcement passed on to the Police Commission.

Ashley’s passion for Environmental Sustainability is evident when she views Edmonton through a climate lens.  “How can we create more walkable, dense amenity-rich neighbourhoods so people can meet all their needs close to home?” The zoning by-law renewal is an opportunity for more mixed-use neighbourhoods.  Budget decisions are intertwined with transit and housing initiatives, but federal and provincial finances make improvements and redesign possible to match municipal funds.

Bill 4 has allowed the province and council to share priorities.  Disappointments for operational dollars were noted by Ashley, but establishing intergovernmental connections addresses climate change and action at all government levels.

Council measures regarding Anti-Racism indicate work to do but funding and granting opportunities give grassroots organizations opportunities. As a leader and elected official, “it’s important to…. become vocal about improving conditions for Edmontonians,” Councillor Salvador explains. She believes a city’s values show in the budget, so funding for priorities is imperative.

The mask mandate bylaw was repealed in Edmonton.  There will be a robust discussion on March 22nd regarding masking on transit and public city facilities.  Snow removal feedback will be discussed on April 25th

Ashley’s goal is a greater focus on transit issues, revitalizing neighbourhoods, making housing affordable for young families, seniors and the homeless and sustainable transit. Improvements are also needed as well for the public hearing process.  Countless reports give Ashley a reason to continue her role as councillor.
