Discover your Heritage is a monthly show hosted by Emilienne Batoum. In this episode, she is joined by Edmonton Historian Sarah Macdonald, who shared her insights about the city’s history.

“Edmonton is located on Treaty 6 on Cree Nation.

“Edmonton is named after Fort Edmonton. The area was originally named Beaver Hills and it stood for the hills around the area. It is really important that we recognise the traditional names of the area.”

“Edmonton was named after Edmonton House which was a part of the Hudson Bay Company Fort system which was named after Fort system”.

“The Fort system moved around quite a bit till it stopped where the Legislature building now stands and it combines into Fort Edmonton, that’s where we got the name Edmonton from.”

I think it is important that the Hudson Bay company was part of Rubert’s land.It was a multicultural pot of diversity. The company employed a diverse group of people who were interested in the fur trade. There were Ukrainians, French, Cree, English, Dutch, Germans.. even the paintings we have of the early fort were painted without the early representation of the Fort”
