Precious Majekodunmi wins Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award

Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani presented the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Awards to 10 young Albertans for excellence in leadership and the arts.

The Golden Jubilee Citizenship award honors students who have shown themselves to be community builders and leaders, civically minded, passionate about volunteering, and who whole-heartedly embrace the spirit of their cause.

Each year, eight young Albertans receive a medal and a $5,000 scholarship.

The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Scholarships for Performing and Visual Arts honors two students who demonstrate talent, potential, and a clear vision to realize their artistic goals through education and training.

Queen’s Golden Jubilee Citizenship Medal Award recipients are Annika Kruger, Calgary, Asha Nathoo, Calgary, Azaad Gill, Calgary, Eric Au, Edmonton, Erin Walker, La Corey, Jessica Hadwin, Consort, Joshua Kroker, Lethbridge, and Precious Majekodunmi, Fort McMurray.

A little about Precious Majekodunmi

Precious Majekodunmi (a graduate from Westwood Community High School, Fort McMurray) is currently studying Nursing at the University of Alberta. She is an active and committed student who took part in her school’s Math Leadership Group, Science Fair, Queens Code and Principal’s Advisory Group. Precious organized and promoted Black History month and many other multicultural events in her school. As a level four Flight Corporal for the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Precious taught younger Cadets, lead various activities, learned about survival, aerodynamics, public speaking, leadership and marksmanship, and completed community service projects. She volunteered with Northern Lights Regional Hospital, the Wood Buffalo Food Bank, the Multicultural Association, Nigerian Canadian Association, MACOY, the local library and the YMCA.

 

The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Recognition Act will establish the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Awards when it comes into force. These awards will replace the Golden Jubilee Awards next year in recognition of the 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
