Indigenous History Month – Line up of Events

Spread the love

The City of Edmonton Indigenous Relations Office (IRO) supports Indigenous History Month in Edmonton by promoting the Indigenous events and activities happening in and around Edmonton throughout June.

Every June,  many organizations, agencies, and communities host a variety of events that strengthen the community through learning, understanding, and celebration of Indigenous histories, heritage, diversity, cultures, and people.

Events for the month

Inspired by stories of strength and care in the face of enfranchisement, displacement and the loss of language, Cree and Métis artist Michelle Sound’s work honors the sacrifices of past generations. The Art Gallery of St. Albert’s Staircase and Vault feature exhibition spaces in kanawêyimêw (She takes care of them). The dates are 18 May and 21 June.

The Dreamspeakers International Indigenous Art festival is from 27 May – to 4 June:   Celebrate the latest works by Indigenous peoples’ innovation in film, video, and new media, presenting selections of Indigenous works from around the globe. The works accepted reflect the diversity of the world’s Indigenous nations and illustrate the vitality and excellence of our art and culture.
Reconciliation is…when we know each others’ stories and begin to recognize them on our own. There is so much more to the story.

There is a cost to this event.

June 1-15 is National Indigenous Peoples’ Day: The Alberta government recognizes National Indigenous History Month this June by highlighting historical facts and vibrant performances of Indigenous Peoples in Alberta. This is an especially important time of year to focus on reconciliation by honoring and better understanding Indigenous history and culture. Join us online.

1-30 June   Indigenous Peoples Experience: Gather and explore life through the diversity of First Nations and Métis peoples’ histories, cultures, experiences, and perspectives, local to Indigenous life in the Beaver Hills, or Edmonton region. These stories, teachings, and memories have been passed through millennia. They reflect a rich and resilient history and deep connection to the land and seasons. Whether in Cree, Dene, Anishinaabe, Nakota, Blackfoot, or Michif, this shared knowledge is timeless.

4 June  Launch Indigenous History Month in Edmonton:

Join the City of Edmonton as we launch National Indigenous History Month in Edmonton in partnership with the ‘Connect with our Roots’ event at Blackburne Park. A short program with Elders, guest speakers, and performers at 10 am will help us launch this month-long celebration in a good way.  Connect with our Roots event with other Indigenous knowledge sharing and entertainment continues after until 2 pm.

4 June Connect with our Roots

Join us in celebrating Indigenous culture and ‘connecting with our roots’ by learning how Indigenous knowledge connects with nature, including the native species we plant on Treaty 6 Territory. Activities will include tree planting, plant/seedling giveaway, and Indigenous-led entertainment and knowledge sharing.  Register early for a tree planting spot!  No registration is required for plant giveaways or participation in the activities.
