Winter Festivals in Edmonton
In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Edmonton’s WinterCity Strategy, the Winter City Festivals Group has unveiled a series of captivating winter-themed art installations that embody the unique spirit of the city’s renowned winter festivals. This consortium comprises four founding festivals: Activate Arts Alberta (formerly Ice on Whyte), Deep Freeze – presented by Arts on the Ave, Flying Canoë Volant, and the Silver Skate Festival. Each installation reflects the distinct essence of its respective festival, contributing to a vibrant tapestry of winter artistry in Edmonton.
The Owl – by Activate Arts Alberta
Crafted by internationally recognized ice carver Steve Buzak and Edmonton artist Jayleen Wilkie, “The Owl” is a mesmerizing ice sculpture that showcases the intricate beauty achievable in frozen mediums. Activate Arts Alberta, known for producing Chiseled, Edmonton’s international ice carving competition, continues to enchant audiences with their winter creations.
The Illumination Lantern Tower – by Deep Freeze
Originally crafted by Peter Field for the First Night Festival in the late 1990s, this vibrant installation has been revitalized by co-creator Randall Fraser. Now a centerpiece of the Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival, the Lantern Tower stands as a symbol of resilience and celebration, bringing warmth and color to Edmonton’s winter landscape.
Warp Speed and Lanterns – by Flying Canoë Volant
The Flying Canoë Volant team presents a black light installation that simulates a journey through the night sky at warp speed. Complemented by 16 unique lantern designs by local artist Dylan Toymaker, this installation invites viewers to immerse themselves in a fusion of light and cultural storytelling.
The Singing Tree with Local Music – by Silver Skate Festival
Designed by artist Gail Ksionzyk in 2020, “The Singing Tree” responds to sound, dancing to both external voices and its own internal rhythm. This interactive installation embodies the Silver Skate Festival’s commitment to blending art, culture, and recreation, offering a dynamic experience that resonates with visitors.
These installations are prominently displayed in Sir Winston Churchill Square and City Hall Plaza, transforming Edmonton’s downtown into a winter wonderland that celebrates the city’s rich festival heritage and the enduring allure of winter.
