Africa Centre Celebrates Black History Month 2025

Spread the love

This February, Africa Centre is proud to celebrate Black History Month under the theme: “Acknowledging the Past and Advocating for Change.” This theme highlights the importance of honoring the history, struggles, and achievements of Black communities while working towards a more equitable future. In alignment with the national theme, “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations,” this year’s celebrations recognize the lasting impact of Black Canadians.

Africa Centre’s Executive Director, Sam Juru, emphasizes the importance of this recognition, stating, “Our mission focuses on honouring the resilience and contributions of African descent communities year-round. With so many community experiences across the country this year, it is important to come together and celebrate the significant contributions of Black communities in arts, education, innovation, and beyond.”

A Month of Community Events

As part of its commitment to fostering connections and amplifying diverse voices, Africa Centre has partnered with the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Community Foundation, and Edmonton Heritage Council to establish the Black History Month Initiative Fund. This initiative supports over 28 community-led events designed to educate, inspire, and celebrate Black excellence.
