Calgary African Community Collective Champions Systems Change at National Black Summit

A strong delegation from the Calgary African Community Collective (CACC), including Cohort Ambassadors and key board members, made a powerful impression at the recently concluded National Black Summit. Led by the newly appointed Executive Director, Dr. Charles Odame-Ankrah, the team showcased CACC’s groundbreaking systems change initiative, highlighting its tangible impact on grassroots transformation in Calgary.

A Blueprint for National Unity

At the summit, CACC leaders engaged with top-tier decision-makers, including representatives from FFBC, Group3737, and the Michaëlle Jean Foundation. Discussions centered on how Calgary’s ecosystem-driven, Afrocentric approach to community development could serve as a blueprint for other Black organizations across Canada. Rather than working in silos, the delegation emphasized the power of collective action, a model that could unify efforts in cities nationwide.

The significance of these conversations was further underscored by amanuel melles, Executive Director of the Network for the Advancement of Black Communities (NABC), who facilitated a strategic dialogue between CACC and the newly established Toronto African Community Collective. This historic meeting laid the foundation for a national framework of collaboration, fostering synergy rather than competition among Black-led initiatives.

A Bid to Bring the Black Summit to Calgary

Recognizing the momentum CACC has built in Calgary, the organization is extending a formal invitation to the Michaëlle Jean Foundation to consider hosting the National Black Summit in Calgary after next year’s event in Winnipeg. With its innovative systems-change model and a growing network of engaged leaders, Calgary is well-positioned to become a national hub for Black-led transformation.

Acknowledging the Calgary Foundation’s Role

CACC’s progress would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Calgary Foundation, whose investment in this systems-change initiative has enabled real-world impact. By embracing an Afrocentric approach, CACC has ensured that change is not just theoretical but actively reshaping lives, policies, and community dynamics.

As the conversation on Black leadership, empowerment, and collective success continues to gain traction, CACC remains committed to its vision of fostering unity, sustainability, and generational impact—starting in Calgary and extending across Canada.
