
Dr. Temitope Oriola Appointed Associate Dean (Research) at the College of Social Sciences
The College of Social Sciences is pleased to announce that Dr. Temitope Oriola has been appointed as the next Associate Dean (Research) for a three-year term.
A highly respected scholar in criminology and terrorism studies, Dr. Oriola has made significant contributions to academia, policy, and public discourse. He previously served as Associate Dean (Undergraduate) in the Faculty of Arts and has held leadership roles as the President of the Canadian Sociological Association and interim Chair of the Department of Sociology. His influence extends beyond academia, having served as a director on the board of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and Chair of the University of Alberta Press Committee.
Dr. Oriola’s research and expertise have shaped national policies. As a special adviser to the Government of Alberta on the Police Act Review, his recommendations played a pivotal role in The Police Amendment Act of 2022, bringing legislative change to policing in the province.
A recipient of numerous prestigious national and international accolades, Dr. Oriola was honored with the Governor General of Canada Academic Gold Medal and has received distinguished fellowships, including the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Dorothy Killam Fellowship, and Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship. His contributions to human rights and academia have also earned him the Gerald L. Gall Human Rights Award, University of Alberta J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research, and the CAFA Distinguished Academic Award.
Recognized for his outstanding service to Alberta, Dr. Oriola was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2023, following a recommendation by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
