Investing in Community: Alberta’s Commitment to Cultural Diversity

Alberta’s government is committed to creating a province where people of all backgrounds feel seen, valued, and included. One powerful way this is being accomplished is through the Ethnocultural Grant Program, which supports local organizations in building vibrant, multicultural communities. As part of Budget 2025, Alberta has allocated $12 million over three years to continue uplifting diverse communities and promoting cross-cultural understanding, including Indigenous heritage and traditions.

“Alberta is filled with vibrant, multicultural communities, and these grants support community-led initiatives that allow many ethnocultural groups to share their unique heritage with fellow Albertans. This is multiculturalism in action.”
— Muhammad Yaseen, Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism

During the most recent grant intake for the 2024–2025 year, nearly $5 million in funding was awarded to 140 community organizations. These funds supported a range of events and programs that brought people together, celebrated cultural identities, and created inclusive spaces for learning and connection.

From multicultural festivals to educational workshops, the Ethnocultural Grant Program empowers local leaders to address key community needs—such as social integration, cultural preservation, and youth outreach. These initiatives foster intercultural dialogue, promote inclusion, and strengthen the social fabric of Alberta.

“Our multicultural event became a bridge between communities. The grant we received made it possible to represent our culture authentically and reach a wide audience.”
— Woo Sang Yoon, President, Canada Korean Broadcasting Society

“The government’s support allowed us to digitize our heritage materials and connect with the community at events like the Calgary Caribbean Festival. It made a real impact.”
— Margaret Daniel, President, St. Lucia Cultural Association

With a continued focus on education, health, and economic growth, Alberta’s 2025 budget ensures that investments in multiculturalism remain a priority. The next round of applications for the Ethnocultural Grant Program is expected in fall 2025.
