A new era of safety, support, and equity is here. Alberta is leading the nation with Building on Our Strengths: Alberta’s 10-Year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violencethe most comprehensive plan of its kind in Canada. With over 100 actionable initiatives, this province-wide strategy is a commitment to ending all forms of gender-based violence and creating a future where every Albertan is safe, seen, and supported.

Gender-based violence is a serious and complex issue that touches all communities. It affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences — often in silence. Alberta’s new strategy aims to change that, building a safer, more inclusive society where no one is left behind.

What the Strategy Aims to Do

At its core, the 10-year strategy is built on compassion, prevention, and empowerment. It outlines a clear path forward through immediate and long-term actions. These include:

  • Raising Awareness: Educating Albertans about what gender-based violence is — and what we can do when we see it.

  • Preventing Violence Before It Starts: Addressing root causes, shifting attitudes, and engaging men and boys as allies.

  • Supporting Survivors: Ensuring culturally responsive, trauma-informed support is available where and when it’s needed.

  • Empowering Women: Providing resources for financial independence and security.

  • Elevating Indigenous Voices: Supporting Indigenous-led solutions that reflect traditional knowledge, values, and community priorities.

A Whole-of-Community Approach

This isn’t just a government document — it’s a movement. The strategy builds on the work of survivors, frontline organizations, advocates, academics, and Indigenous leaders who have been doing the work for decades. The Alberta government consulted more than 500 stakeholders, held community meetings, and engaged Indigenous communities to ensure this plan is collaborative and inclusive.

Programs and actions will stretch across justice, healthcare, education, shelter services, transportation, and more — all with the goal of reducing harm and increasing hope.

Meaningful Investment

Budget 2025 includes a $19.8 million commitment to support this strategy — part of a larger $188 million annual investment into gender-based violence services across Alberta. These investments will support:

  • Women’s shelters and sexual assault centres

  • Campus sexual violence prevention

  • Elder abuse awareness

  • Indigenous-led healing initiatives

  • Survivor-centred legal supports

  • Training for service providers

  • Safer transportation options for those fleeing violence

A Future Rooted in Hope

From promoting Clare’s Law to strengthening trauma-informed care, this strategy is a beacon of hope for survivors and a call to action for all Albertans. It’s about protecting the most vulnerable, holding offenders accountable, and building a culture where safety and respect are the norm.

This is Alberta saying: Enough is enoughand backing that statement with action, resources, and vision.

For women, families, and communities across the province, this is a historic and hopeful step forward.
