National Indigenous Peoples Day
June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Alberta and Canada. It is a moment to honour the wisdom and resilience of Indigenous communities and to recognize their enduring role in shaping the land we all call home.
As Minister of Indigenous Relations Rajan Sawhney noted in her June 20 statement, “National Indigenous Peoples Day is more than a celebration – it is a call to action.” It is a day to listen deeply, learn respectfully, and reflect meaningfully on the experiences of Indigenous Peoples—both past and present.
The Government of Alberta has affirmed its commitment to reconciliation, acknowledging that Indigenous voices and perspectives are essential to our collective future. From traditional teachings to contemporary leadership, Indigenous Peoples continue to enrich Alberta’s cultural, social, and spiritual fabric.
This year, Minister Sawhney will attend a community celebration at the Royal Alberta Museum—an event that brings together people from across the Edmonton region to experience Indigenous music, language, arts, and culture. Events like this offer opportunities for connection, education, and unity in the spirit of reconciliation.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in National Indigenous Peoples Day by attending local events, supporting Indigenous artists, reading works by Indigenous authors, or simply taking time to learn more about the deep and diverse cultures that have existed on this land for generations.
Let us walk together, in respect and partnership, as we continue the journey toward reconciliation—not just on June 21, but every day.
