Alberta’s government is launching a pilot project to increase the speed limit to 120 km/h on a section of Highway 2, giving drivers a faster and more efficient travel experience on one of the province’s busiest corridors.
Effective immediately, the speed limit has been raised from 110 km/h to 120 km/h on a stretch south of Leduc. This decision follows public feedback, with nearly 70 per cent of survey respondents supporting higher speed limits on rural divided highways.
A Data-Driven Pilot
This change is part of a monitored pilot program. Alberta’s government is working closely with law enforcement to:
- Track driver behaviour
- Monitor traffic flow
- Conduct ongoing safety assessments
The goal is to evaluate whether higher speed limits can be implemented safely while improving the driving experience.
Balancing Speed with Safety
Alongside the pilot, the province is strengthening enforcement to deter dangerous driving. Penalties have increased significantly:
- 50% increase for serious offences such as careless driving, excessive speeding, stunting, and racing
- 30% increase for most other traffic violations
These measures are intended to ensure that while speed limits may rise, accountability and road safety remain a top priority.
Infrastructure Improvements
To support the higher speed limit, upgrades have been completed along this section of Highway 2, including:
- Improved acceleration and deceleration lanes
- Upgraded interchanges
- Road surface paving in key areas
- Installation of additional safety barriers
- Clear signage marking the start and end of the 120 km/h zone

Motorists are reminded that posted speed limits apply under ideal conditions. Drivers should always adjust their speed when:
- Roads are wet or icy
- Visibility is reduced
- Traffic conditions require caution
