Positive Parenting Workshops Teaches An Old Method With A New Emphasis |

Passionate about children, Edmonton based mother Funmi Alegbe organised an event to show other parents how to discipline their children positively. Tired of epic tantrums from your four-year-old, frustrated about the lack of enthusiasm in your fourteen years old, positive parenting might hold the keys of knowledge.

According to the website, positveparentingsolutions.com, positive parenting is explained: "Positive parenting holds children to realistic standards by using clear expectations and empowering children to become the resilient and capable children you hope them to be. It is based on the sound work of renowned psychologist Arthur Adler, and parents all over the world have used it successfully".

Positive parenting simply encourages parents to be both compassionate and firm. It was this idea – that parents be both compassionate and firm – that led Jane Nelsen, Ed.D. to develop the Positive Discipline methodology used by parents worldwide.

At the workshop, the three principles of positive parenting were developed.

The first principle we learnt was: a child’s primary goal is to achieve belonging and significance. All children just want to feel at home where they are. They want to feel loved and secure. We can understand that.

The second principle being: all behaviour is goal-oriented. When children misbehave, the root cause of their behaviour is that they are testing boundaries as they seek significance and belonging.

Finally,  a  misbehaving child is a discouraged or disheartened Child. A disheartened adult is a depressed one. Children don't have the language to express what is going on in their minds. As parents, we need to understand that a misbehaving child is not a bad child. A misbehaving child is NOT a defiant child. A misbehaving child is NOT an uncontrollable child. A misbehaving child is NOT a mean child. Dealing with the root cause of their bad behaviour helps to alter the choices the children make.
