University of Alberta Sociology Professor and Criminologist Temitope Oriola joined The Yeg Show to talk about police reform and systemic discrimination in Edmonton. The City of Edmonton had indicated it would be creating a task force to investigate the concerns associated with police brutality and systemic discrimination.

Police brutality led to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, United States and as a direct response to that, it appears that the world is listening to what it means when we say black lives matter. In Edmonton,  Multiple people had presented their views at the Town Hall virtual meetings and the hundreds attended the Black Lives Matter Protest at the Alberta Legislature in June 2020.

Prof Oriola argued that the City of Edmonton can implement some basic ideas easily. They can put an end to carding, they can conduct psychopathic screening to weed out killer cops. The City can hire more women who are likely to use less force and they can hire university-educated officers.
