Day 2 Cherished Above All Others ~ Daily Devotions with Pastor Greg Obong Oshotse

Spread the love

Text: Deuteronomy 32:10
“He found him in a desert land, And in the howling waste of a wilderness; He
encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the pupil of His eye.
Text: Proverbs 7:2
“Keep my commandments and live, And my teaching as the apple of your eye.”
King Alfred the Great (849-899) was king of Wessex, a
Saxon kingdom in southwestern England from 871-899. He
is remembered as a great medieval king, especially in his
passion for learning and compassion for the weak. To
protect them from corrupt judges he came up with a code
of laws, influenced in part by his studies in the Book of
Exodus. He also studied Latin and translated books into
English. His translation of a work by Pope Gregory I, titled
Gregory’s Pastoral Care, was used by priests to instruct their
flock. Alfred is credited with the first use of the phrase ‘the
apple of my eye’ in Old English in that translation.
God uses it affectionately to refer to His people as the focus
of His tender care, and recipients of His compassionate love.
Moses portrays Israel as homeless, hungry and surrounded
in the wilderness by ferocious animals, and then being
rescued by God. It is a picture of how God cherishes His
people above all others. They still get the same special care
today. In return, He asks that they make His word the object
of their tender and devout attention. To make the apple of
our eye the word of Him who has made us the apple of His
eye should always be a thing of joy. May it be so in 2021.
Prayer Dear Father, may Your word be very dear to us this year in Christ’s name, Amen.
