10 Strategies To Survive Home School Learning

Spread the love

With the prospect of home school learning looming over us all, here are some strategies that could help us to avoid the stress that will inevitably occur.

  1. It is important that you do not over do it: Remember, it is May. The school year closes in about 4 -6 weeks. Our children are already tired. As a parent, I am tired. I am just deeply grateful that we got through this school year. Aren’t you tired?
  2. Apply grace: Your mental health counts. If you feel stressed, stop and try it again. Later.
  3. Start with a nice cup of tea: Having lived in England for half of my life, I understand the power of a soothing cup of tea before the day starts. For some, it is coffee. Start your day with what works for you. Add a decent amount of meditation and prayer. It may seem insignificant but it helps. When you as a parent feel happy and well supported, you are able to help and support your children happily.
  4. Play music: most children respond to music as it can be soothing. What are your favorite tracks? Is it possible to play music whilst your children learn in a calm atmosphere?
  5. Have a routine and build in planned breaks: This can be hard for mums and dads who also have a day job. For parents, you may want to consider starting your job earlier. Could starting at 7am when the kids are still in bed help?
  6. Break the day into chunks: Who says they have to follow school hours? Be generous with your time, allowing them to go for bicycle rides and jumping on the trampoline when things begin to get tricky.
  7. This may be a time to reinforce the importance of reading and creative writing. If they find school work boring, encourage them to indulge in a favorite activity like writing to a pen pal, coloring, learning to draw and paint.
  8. Don’t attempt  to do it all alone: Call your children’s school and ask the class teacher for help. Help is closer than you think.
  9. Have snacks and fruits on the go. For children, I suppose having some sugar in the system can stimulate things and move things along. Or maybe not!
  10. Reward your children:  Children in kindergarten to grade 4 love rewards. Reward them with opportunities to go play outside if they get their work done.   Have fun: At the end of the day, it will be  just fine. Don’t stress the little stuff.
