The Gift of Time

by Jacqueline Biollo, MBA, ICD.D

Daylight Saving Time comes but twice a year in Canada. In March 2022, Albertan’s will spring the clocks forward. An initiative that was first observed in 1908, and long since debated as to the pros and cons of turning clocks forward or backwards. Other than the argument that Daylight Saving Time gives more hours with light in the evening, ‘How does 60 minutes effect our lives?’

Some may immediately think of 60 Minutes, the most successful broadcast in television history (created in 1968 and premiered on CBS), offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments, and profiles of people in the news. Others may think of 60 minutes as a period of time equal to 1/24th of a day, or a unit for measuring periods of time. Others still may think of what can be done in 60 minutes, like take a nap, read a book, exercise, or prep a meal.

But ‘Where did 60 minutes come from?’, not to mention the 60 seconds in every minute, or ‘Why are there 24-hours in a day? According to Phil Molyneux, London W2, these concepts ‘comes from the Babylonians who used a sexagesimal (counting in 60s) system for mathematics and astronomy’.

If you’re like me, and suffer from insomnia, 60-minutes (of sleep) is but one of the many things I often hope for when my head hits the pillow. But it is also the extra 60-minutes of productivity I gain in the wee hours of the morning when my brain won’t shut off. So I use that time to get some extra work done before the sun comes up or my day starts in earnest.

The gift of time can be a blessing or a curse. Our time on earth is limited, yet oftentimes we live our lives as if it is unlimited. Here are some things to consider:

  • Don’t put things off | Don’t think you have lots of time to get to things later | You never know what tomorrow will bring
  • Gain wisdom and use that to enrich your life and the lives around you
  • Be intentional with your time | Don’t take anything for granted

Time does not really have a designated purpose, but it does have limits. Plan as much time as needed to do something for yourself or others with purpose. Specific actions result in specific reactions, and every behaviour has a natural consequence. Use time to its best and highest purpose.
