Spread the love

Black UAlberta Students Welcome Community to Celebrate Cultural Resilience in their Black History Month Gala.

You are cordially invited to join the University of Alberta’s Black Students’ Association (UABSA) to celebrate Black History Month 2023!

On February 24th, 2023, the UABSA is hosting a Black History Month (BHM) Gala to celebrate BHM amongst Black students and Allies of the University of Alberta. The event’s theme, “Cultural Resilience in Black Arts,” will highlight the cultural history of the various forms of Black Arts in the diaspora. This year, the gala will showcase the diverse artistic cultures encompassing Edmonton’s various African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities.

Gina Malaba, the 2022/23 UABSA President, notes: “Black History Month is an annual celebration that recognizes the influence and achievements that Black individuals have made (and continue to make) throughout society. Whether it be through their academia, social activism or artistic endeavours, Black students continue to showcase themselves as trailblazing leaders of our generation. In honour of this monumental month, the UABSA has created a roster of events that are meant to inspire and promote values of community and connection.”

This year’s BHM Gala is set to be our biggest event of the year. We expect around 150 attendees, with notable VIP guests like the Mayor of Edmonton, the Chancellor of the University of Alberta, and several MLAs from Edmonton. The gala also features various local Black-owned businesses, performances, and exhibited art from Edmonton’s ACB artists and groups.

Through the exhibition of culturally inspired artwork, music, fashion, and other forms of artistic performances, the goal of the 2023 UABSA Gala is to provide a safe space for the ACB community to express their rich culture and heritage. The event will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn about the rich histories, reasons, and stories behind the development of the ACB cultural arts.

The UABSA’s BHM Gala is organized by student executives and volunteers and it is sponsored by the Alberta Public Interest Research Group (APIRG). The University of Alberta Black Students’ Association has an official membership of over 500 “TRIBE” members and strives to empower and promote community interaction among all Black students at the University of Alberta. Intending to foster student development, the UABSA’s objective is to create a network of supportive members who connect culturally and socially and contribute to one another’s success academically.
