Alberta Launches New Grant Program to Support Survivors of Gender-Based Violence

The Government of Alberta is introducing a new grant program aimed at improving access to justice and support services for survivors of gender-based violence across the province.

Through the new Community Pathways to Justice Grant, Alberta is providing $1.25 million in one-time funding to help community organizations and Indigenous communities strengthen programs that support survivors and promote safer communities.

The initiative is part of Alberta’s 10-Year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence, which focuses on preventing violence, supporting survivors, holding offenders accountable, and creating lasting systemic change.

Supporting Survivors Where They Need It Most

The grant will help fund community-based programs and services that:

  • Provide support and advocacy for survivors
  • Improve access to justice and legal information
  • Help individuals navigate the justice system
  • Increase public education and awareness about gender-based violence
  • Strengthen collaboration among service providers
  • Support restorative justice initiatives

The goal is to ensure survivors have access to the resources, information, and support they need to move forward safely and confidently.

Who Can Apply?

Funding is available to eligible Alberta-based organizations, including:

  • Registered non-profit organizations
  • Charitable organizations
  • Indigenous communities and organizations

Successful applicants may receive grants ranging from $50,000 to $150,000, with funding intended to support operational activities and service delivery.

Applications open July 14 and close August 1.

Part of a Long-Term Commitment

The Community Pathways to Justice Grant is one of several actions being implemented through Alberta’s long-term strategy to address gender-based violence.

The grant is supported through Alberta’s four-year, $54-million agreement with the federal government to advance initiatives that prevent and respond to gender-based violence. In addition, Alberta’s Budget 2025 commits $188 million toward programs and services that support survivors and address the root causes of violence.

Understanding Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual where gender is a contributing factor. It can take many forms, including:

  • Intimate partner violence
  • Family violence
  • Sexual violence
  • Stalking and harassment
  • Human trafficking
  • Financial abuse
  • Online exploitation and cyber harassment

These forms of violence can have lasting impacts on individuals, families, and communities, making accessible support services and pathways to justice critically important.
