They may be from Mars and women from Jupiter, a doctor from Calgary Dr Unati Makiwane is devoted to taking care of our men and their mental health. Part of her bio reads: “Dr Unati Makiwane is a Family Physician for over 14 years and a Health Coach focusing on Men’s Health and Children’s Mental Health. She immigrated from  South Africa to Saskatchewan in 2010 and later moved to Alberta in 2014. She is the founder of United Medical Clinic in Calgary, Canada. She’s also the Medical Director and a Host of “Black Mental Health Matters” weekly Show for the United States of Africa. Dr Unati is the first Black Female Physician in Canada to host a Men’s Health Talk Show which runs once a week where she interacts with a global community of Men seeking to lead healthy lives mentally, physically and spiritually. She recently launched her online course “Men Get Depressed Too”

With an impressive resume and a mum to a boy-child, it is important to Dr Unati that men are given the chance to talk about their mental health. Boys growing up are expected to show up as strong and macho. In some ways, we seem to have moved on from this sort of stereotypes of men, but in the long run, men need to get checked for depression. In this far-reaching media chat, she talked about screening early for cancers, causes of depression, diet and staying healthy.

According to HealthLine, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, men died by suicide at a rate of 3.54 per cent higher than women in 2017. Mental Health America reports 6 million men are affected by depression in the United States every year. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism puts the annual number of men dying due to alcohol-related causes at  62,000 compared to 26,000 women. And men are also two to three times more likely to misuse drugs than women. Depression and suicide are ranked as a leading cause of death among men.

Her online course: Men Get Depressed too is available to buy on her website.
