October 31, 2025 — Edmonton, AB

Alberta’s government has announced the cancellation of all January 2026 provincial diploma exams and Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs). The decision comes after weeks of lost instructional time caused by the recent teacher strike.

Students will have the option to write their diploma exams in April or June 2026 on a voluntary basis. Those who choose not to write at a later date will receive their school-awarded mark as their final grade, with a transcript notation confirming that no diploma exam was written. The province has assured families that this change will not impact students’ graduation, post-secondary applications, or admissions.

School authorities across Alberta will ensure all learning outcomes are met and may adjust their school calendars to support ongoing instruction. Families will be notified directly of any schedule changes.

January 2026 diploma exams and PATs are cancelled for all school authorities. Students are automatically exempt from the January exams. Students can choose to write the exams in April or June 2026. Post-secondary applications and graduation will not be affected.
