Help for struggling families
Today, our Liberal government announced that Canadians will begin receiving additional financial support this summer to help with the rising cost of groceries and everyday essentials. At a time when global instability and rising prices are putting real pressure on families, our government is taking action to make sure Canadians can afford the basics. Eligible Canadians will receive a one-time payment on June 5th, 2026, issued as a top-up to the GST/HST credit, equal to 50% of their current benefit. In total, a family of four could receive up to $1,890 in 2026, including the one-time top-up, while a single individual could receive up to $950. The first Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit payment will be on June 5th, 2026.
Starting July 3rd, 2026, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit will replace the GST/HST credit, with quarterly payments increasing by 25% over the next five years. Together, these measures will support more than 12 million Canadians, helping families better manage the cost of food, rent, and everyday needs. For more details on this announcement, please find the official press releasehere.
Individuals who filed their 2024 tax return and were eligible for the GST/HST credit earlier this year will receive the June 5th payment automatically, and it may still appear as the GST/HST credit in their account. Canadians are encouraged to ensure their taxes are filed so they can access this support.
At the same time, our government has taken concrete steps to lower everyday costs where it matters most for everyday expenses. As of April 20th, 2026, the federal fuel excise tax has been temporarily reduced to zero, helping bring down the cost of gasoline and diesel. This is expected to save Canadians about 10 cents per litre at the pump, providing immediate relief for those who rely on their vehicles for work, school, and daily life. These actions reflect a clear plan to make life more affordable and build a stronger, more independent Canadian economy. While we cannot control global events, we are focused on what we can control – putting money back in Canadians’ pockets and making sure families have the support they need during challenging times.
