ACCEC Celebrates Black Candidates as Edmonton Goes to the Polls

Dunia Nur is the President of the African Canadian Civic Engagement Council.

What Do They Do At ACCEC?

ACCEC is a national public affairs organisation that promotes and strengthens opportunities for African, Caribbean, Black and Racialized communities. Around lunch time on Sunday October 17th,  they released a video showing  BIPOC council  candidates running in the Edmonton Council Election on October 18th. The two minute video has been seen thousands of times on Twitter alone. ACCEC‘ s strategy is to promote the quality of life for African Canadians by addressing barriers in housing, immigration, human rights, community security, health, education, economic development, civic engagement, security, environment, quality social services  and expressions of art and culture.

LCCMedia is proud of the campaign the following Bipoc candidates have run. They are: Ahmed Knowmadic Ali for ward Tastawiyiniwak, Rhiannon Hoyle for ward ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi, Adrian Bruff  and Naima Hale for ward O day’min, Gerald Mutabazi Amani for ward Dene, Sharmaine Turner for ward Karhiio and Haruun Ali for ward Papastew.

What is important to Black Council Candidates?

The candidates  say the election is important to them because they are passionate about affordable housing, they would like to set the tone for the city for the next decade, it would be the first time a black person is elected member of Edmonton city council, they want climate change to be at the forefront of the council, important for diversity, they want a sit at the table, this election would be a milestone for an inclusive city.

Whatever the outcome of the elections for these candidates, we owe them our gratitude for putting themselves out there and especially for making blacks more visible politically.
