———————————————-

It was back in 2008 when insomnia hit me so hard. How could I fall asleep when debt collectors were pounding on my door daily, and the bills were piling up so high?” I didn’t sign up for this,” I often thought miserably. I regretted leaving Africa to come and struggle in Canada. To make matters worse, I got sick and was hospitalized.

Back then, I was almost $30k in debt. We live in an era where people compete with the Jones and living above our means has become the norm. Accumulating useless trinkets has drowned most people in debt, and most have dug holes too deep to dig themselves out. But I have great news for you.

A few years later, I discovered a tv show called Till Debt Do Us Apart. If you watched this show, you probably remember the jars. After 11 months of watching the show and implementing Gail’s advice, I cleared $12000 worth of debt in less than a year.

My series, Till death separates us, is inspired by my brand #TBH. You are probably wondering what TBH means: Take back your health. The brand focuses on helping people improve their physical, mental, and financial health.

I am here to share tips on clearing debt quickly; please share this article with anyone who might need this.

As I write this article, I am constantly smiling as I remember the journey that has brought her here. I am not sure how deep you are in debt but be assured there is hope. You will discover practical advice that can help you achieve your goal. On Gail’s show, she mostly helped families with severe financial problems threatening to tear their families apart.

The family fights were mostly about financial issues. Gail’s strategies helped restore families on the verge of separation. I hope this article will help bring order and harmony into your life. Advice given will apply to both singles and couples.

I am excited to share my story and hope it will inspire you to take the right action and help you clear your debt. In 2009 I shared a townhouse with a roommate, and below is the list of my monthly bills back then:

  1. Rent plus house bills, i.e., electricity, water, and gas, were $2000 a month shared with a roommate.
  2. Car loan monthly payments of $500
  3. Car-related expenses, including gas and car insurance, $500
  4. Food and miscellaneous $500
  5. Credit card minimum monthly payment of $100
  6. Line of credit minimum monthly payment $100

My total expenses were $2700, including 50% of the rent.

I was slowly drowning in debt because my income was less than my expenses.

One day, my roommate walked out, and my situation became worse. My monthly bill shot up to $3700, making my life more miserable, and I was running a huge deficit.

One of the most significant stressors in life is financial troubles, and spending more than one earn is a recipe for disaster. It’s true when they say,

“Live within your means and never try to live up to the Jones.”

Now that you know how terrible my life was back then am excited to jump in and tell you the simple, practical things I did to clear $12000 debt in less than a year.

I am excited to jump in and tell you what I did:

The first step was listing my income and expenses.

Cutting costs was the logical next step, but almost all payments were non-negotiable. If I cut too much on food, then I would starve.

My other option was to increase my income. I needed an income of $4000 to break even and have at least $300 in the savings account.

That would require me to work long hours 7 days a week, and I was not ready to add more misery to my already miserable life. But don’t worry, I quickly found a solution.

In my next article, I will share the next move I took, which was the beginning of my journey to financial freedom.
