BLACK ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS GATHER TO COMMEMORATE JUNETEENTH THROUGH MUSIC, ART AND STORYTELLING
“5 Artists 1 Love” gathers a diverse and dynamic group of Edmonton-based artists to share soulful sounds, toe-tapping tunes and spoken word for its 17th year.
Expressive. Harmonious. Uplifting. Music lovers and supporters of the local art scene are invited to take part in a one-night-only showcase of Edmonton’s top artists, musicians, and performers. The notable roster of talent is set to celebrate Black culture, history and the global significance of Juneteenth, marking the end of slavery in North America along with the holiday’s unique connection to Alberta. The annual event, 5 Artists 1 Love, will be held at the Winspear Centre on June 17 at 7:30 pm.
“This exciting evening explores the rich history of the African diaspora through art, music, dance, and poetry.” says Darren Jordan, Founder and Producer of 5 Artists 1 Love. “Our goal is to showcase both emerging and established artists and support Black talent in our community.”
Founded in 2005, 5 Artists 1 Love began as a small gallery exhibition highlighting Black art and artists as a part of Black History Month. Over the years, the gathering has grown in popularity, expanding to showcase music and dance and becoming a staple in the local entertainment calendar. In 2022, the event moved to the Winspear Centre to accommodate the overwhelming response and sold out.
This year, ‘A Juneteenth Story’ will take the audience on a musical journey around the world, landing in an old-school cook out; event attendees can expect to groove to eclectic sounds from Zimbabwe, Brazil and Jamaica. At the same time, more familiar and recognized genres like Motown, hip hop, funk, and 90’s R&B will also be explored. Everyone’s welcome. You just got your invite to the Cook Out!
“5 Artists 1 Love is one of the most vibrant musical events in Edmonton each year.” says Riwo Egor, lead vocalist of Afro-fusion band Melafrique. “I’m thrilled to be part of it as it’s intentional and meaningful from the inside and out, and from start to finish.”
Each year, a new theme celebrating a different aspect of Black history is unveiled, while the line-up of performers remains a surprise until the days leading up to the event. This year, the theme selected is “Juneteenth,” and will tell stories of Black Americans gaining freedom from slavery and settling in places such as Alberta’s Amber Valley.
“This event shifts the narratives of our Black community’s limitations and enhances our representation within Edmonton’s arts scene,” says Andrew Parker, co-founder of the Black Teachers Association. “It’s a clear demonstration of our community’s talent, which deserves the spotlight in world-renowned settings, like the stage at the Winspear Centre and the Art Gallery of Alberta.”
“Juneteenth” will be performed on June 17, 2023, at the Winspear Centre located at 4 Sir Winston Churchill Square.
