Bukola Ojemakinde, a Nigerian immigrant and chemical engineer based in Calgary, has been recognized for her remarkable contributions to social services and community development since her arrival in Canada in 2006. As the founder and Executive Director of the Bridge to Oasis Foundation and Ladies in the Family Foundation, Bukola has been instrumental in supporting African and Caribbean seniors while empowering women and girls. Her initiatives, including mental health programs for immigrant women and cultural events, have fostered stronger community bonds and promoted resilience. Bukola’s unwavering dedication to service has had a lasting positive impact throughout Calgary.

Bukola is also the founder of Herconnects.ca, a mental health support initiative for women in Calgary and across Canada.

HERConnects.ca is a vital mental health initiative dedicated to supporting and empowering Black women across Calgary and beyond. Founded with the mission to provide a safe and nurturing space, HERConnects offers tailored mental health services, including counseling, and educational resources. The platform is designed to address the unique challenges faced by Black women, fostering resilience, self-care, and overall well-being. By connecting women to culturally sensitive mental health professionals and a community of peers, HERConnects is a beacon of hope for those seeking to overcome mental health challenges in a supportive environment.

At HERConnects, the focus is on holistic wellness, recognizing that mental health is intricately linked to various aspects of life, including family, career, and community. The initiative is committed to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health within Black communities and promoting open, honest conversations about mental wellness. Through workshops, webinars, and community events, HERConnects empowers women to take control of their mental health, providing them with the tools and support they need to thrive. By prioritizing the mental well-being of Black women – and all women-  HERConnects is helping to build stronger, healthier communities.
