
Film Screening: Any Other Way – The Jackie Shane Story
This September, Edmonton audiences will have the chance to experience a powerful story on the big screen. Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story is an award-winning documentary that celebrates the life, music, and legacy of Jackie Shane—a trailblazing Black transgender singer whose voice and courage broke barriers and inspired generations.
Jackie Shane
rose to fame in the 1960s, dazzling audiences with her unforgettable performances and unique style. But her story is more than music—it’s about resilience, identity, and living boldly at a time when the world wasn’t ready to accept her truth. This film brings Jackie’s journey back into the spotlight, reminding us of the importance of representation, love, and self-acceptance.
The screening takes place on Thursday, September 25 at 2 PM at Metro Cinema and is completely free and open to the public. After the film, there will be a Q&A with
the filmmakers, Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee, giving audiences a rare opportunity to hear directly from the creative minds behind the documentary.
This event is made possible through the partnership of the University of Alberta, the Fyrefly Institute, and Metro Cinema, with sponsorship from U of A’s Women’s and Gender Studies Department, the English and Film Studies Department, the Institute for Intersectionality Studies, and the Institute for Gender and Sexual Diversity.
