Starting October 15, Alberta’s Winter Rules for utilities are in effect to make sure Albertans can keep their heat and lights on during the cold months.

From now until April 15, utility companies cannot fully disconnect electricity for homes. And starting November 15, they also can’t fully disconnect natural gas. This means families won’t lose power or heat when they need it most.

Extra Protections in Place

No disconnections are allowed if the weather forecast shows temperatures below zero within 24 hours. If someone’s utilities have already been cut off, the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) will reach out starting November 1 to help get them reconnected before winter. UCA works with utility companies, Alberta Works, and AISH to make sure people get the help they need.
