Citizenship to Be Added to Alberta Driver’s Licences and ID Cards
Starting in the fall of 2026, Albertans will see a new feature on their driver’s licences and ID cards—a clear marker of Canadian citizenship. The idea is simple: instead of carrying different documents to prove who you are and that you’re a citizen, one card will do it all.
The change will also help make Alberta’s election system stronger by confirming that only eligible citizens are voting. It brings Alberta in line with international standards and sets the province up to adjust quickly if more changes come in the future.
Premier Danielle Smith says the move is about more than convenience: “With a single, secure card proving both identity and citizenship, Albertans will face fewer hurdles when applying for government services. This will also strengthen the integrity of elections and other systems that rely on proof of citizenship.”
Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, adds: “This is about making life easier for Albertans. By including citizenship information on these cards, we’re streamlining access to services and reducing the need to carry multiple documents.”
Registry agents are also on board. Rikki McBride, CEO of the Alberta Association of Registry Agents, says: “Your local registry agent supports simple, practical steps that improve the convenience and efficiency of government-issued identification. We’re proud to be part of modernizing these services for Albertans.”
This update builds on the province’s plan to add Alberta health care numbers to driver’s licences by late 2026. Right now, there are more health care numbers in the system than there are people living in Alberta. By combining systems, the government hopes to clear up that gap and make sure health care cards in use match the people actually living here.
