Volunteer with EPS Community Advisory Councils

The Edmonton Police Service is working in collaboration with its three Community Advisory Councils to address new and emerging trends and issues of vulnerability and guide police in addressing problems with vulnerable and underserved communities in the City of Edmonton. Their efforts will support implementing recommendations made from the various community engagement and feedback reports.

Here is an opportunity for you to make a difference in the community. Join one of these councils and become part of the change coming to Edmonton!

Chief’s Community Council consists of community members whose voices, opinions and experiences will assist in shaping the policies and practices of the EPS to better serve members of BIPOC, underserved, and diverse communities. The new Chiefs Community Council is not intended to be a “Diversity Council,” but instead, it will be guided by those who experience marginalization, racism and discrimination. If you are looking for a meaningful way to contribute to your community, the CCC might be just the opportunity you are looking for.

What is the CCC? The CCC is looking for members to fulfill its mandate of:

Commitment to Action Recommendations
Broader engagement and communication
Emerging Communities Framework recommendations

Who are they looking for?

They are looking for a group of diverse people with a keen interest in advising EPS on policy, process, operations, communication and engagement. In addition to interest in, or experience working with or for BIPOC and diverse communities, interest or experience in the following would be considered an asset:

Working with community or civic organizations
Providing advice and recommendations to a large organization
Considering diverse perspectives
Implementing new policies in a large organization
Developing and implementing work plans
Collaborative decision making
Monitoring, reporting and evaluating outcomes

Time Commitment

A two (2) year term that begins in January 2023
A minimum of 2-5 volunteer hours a quarter
Attend four regularly scheduled meetings of the CCC during the year
Additional meetings may be held as required

Nisohkamakewin Council: Relying on the expertise and experiences of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Communities in Edmonton, this council seeks to address the inequalities and barriers in policing that Indigenous peoples face.

Mission:

The Nîsohkamâkewin Council strives to address the barriers and inequalities in policing that Indigenous peoples regularly face within different systems in Canada. This council also aides the EPS in their ongoing commitment to develop, implement and review policing policies and procedures from an Indigenous perspective and worldview. Moreover, the Council supports EPS sworn and civilian members in the important journey to foster meaningful and respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples, an essential step towards reconciliation.

Vision:

The Nîsohkamâkewin Council engaged in meaningful dialogue and transformative experiences to strengthen the relationship among Indigenous peoples and the Edmonton Police Service. Additionally, creating intentional space to discuss visions for a better future, share insights of reconciliation, and explore best practices to contribute, based on everyone’s set of abilities, skills, and strengths.

Values:

The Nîsohkamâkewin Council embraces culture, ceremony, and language to direct us as Indigenous peoples. The seven sacred teachings also provide the guiding principles in our collaboration in restoring our cultural beliefs, practices, and values as a council.

Sexual Orientation, Gender, Identity and Expression Council: involves members who advocate for sexual and gender diverse communities; SOGIE works to advocate and shape a police service that better contributes to and supports members of the 2SLGBTQ+ Community in Edmonton.

Are you interested in shaping a police service to better serve members of sexual and gender-diverse communities? Looking for a meaningful way to contribute to your community? The SOGIE Advisory Council might be just the opportunity you are looking for.

Consensus-based decision making
Monitoring, reporting and evaluating outcomes

Attend 4 regularly scheduled meetings of the SOGIE during the year (Quarterly)
Additional meetings may be held as required
