Career Watch: Sandra Muchekeza becomes Executive Director of ACGC
LCCMedia has learned that Sandra Muchekeza has left the Africa Centre to become the Executive Director of the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC).
Sandra’s departure marks a significant loss for the Africa Centre, where she has made considerable contributions in her capacity as Director of Program Development and Accountability and as the lead for the Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI).
The successor for Sandra’s position at the Africa Centre has not yet been determined.
Sandra Muchekeza is a visionary leader deeply committed to the empowerment of marginalized communities in Edmonton. Born in Kenya, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in Australia. Sandra then moved to Toronto, Canada, kickstarting her career in international development with an internship in Tanzania, followed by roles in various organizations tackling global challenges. Sandra has dedicated her career to program management, project execution, and enhancing systems within the nonprofit sector.
At the Africa Centre, the premier organization serving Black communities in Western Canada, Sandra led the development and accountability of programs, notably the Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI) funded by the Canadian government, aimed at supporting grassroots organizations.
Prior to her involvement with the Africa Centre, Sandra was the Executive Director at the Council of Canadians of African and Caribbean Heritage (CCACH), where she significantly enhanced the organization’s offerings, fundraising efforts, and community engagement in Edmonton.
Sandra also played a pivotal role in the Canada Black Justice Strategy as a member of the Steering Group, advising on consultations with Black communities to inform governmental strategies on criminal justice experiences.
Outside of her professional life, Sandra cherishes time with her family, pursues her interest in photography, enjoys reading, and experiments with cooking.
